    The benefits of resource discovery for publishers: a librarian’s view

    A core goal of librarians is to maximize usage of the content to which their libraries subscribe. Webscale or resource discovery systems offer a single search box for library users to access subscribed content. This article examines usage data at the University of Huddersfield to show how resource discovery has helped to increase the usage of publisher content, which has been made available to discovery vendors and considers the implications for publishers who are yet to do this. The article concludes that resource discovery systems have effectively levelled the playing field, allowing small to medium sized publishers to make content discoverable to users, and encourages publishers who do not have their content indexed in resource discovery systems to speak to discovery service vendor in order to do so at the earliest opportunity

    The potential impact of Open Access repositories and library scholarly publishing on ‘traditional’ publishing models

    This presentation will consider the potential impact of Open Access repositories and library scholarly publishing on ‘traditional’ publishing models. Stone will argue that the suggestion that repositories will deliberately shift use away from journal platforms is irrelevant, and that the increase in dissemination of research and citations far outweighs the potential drop in usage on a particular platform. He will also suggest that low-cost library scholarly publishing for books and monographs can co-exist alongside larger publications and in some cases could provide a supply of early career researchers who are better equipped to move up the publishing ladder

    Huddersfield Open Access Publishing (HOAP) Project

    The JISC funded Huddersfield Open Access Publishing (HOAP) Project aimed to develop a low cost sustainable Open Access (OA) journal publishing platform using EPrints Institutional Repository software. This poster will report on the development of the HOAP platform and discuss the outcomes of the project. The platform was developed to convert the peer reviewed, Teaching in Lifelong Learning journal, from its existing print subscription model to an OA e-journal. A specific front end was created for the journal, with content being archived in the University Repository. As part of this work, there has been a re-write of the notes for contributors section and a move from copyright transfer to a licence to publish model. HOAP is now a member of CrossRef and the Committee on Publishing Ethics, the journal has also been submitted to the Directory of Open Access Journals. The platform will also be used to launch a new title, Huddersfield Research Review during 2012. This title will showcase the most significant research at the University of Huddersfield by including interviews with the authors of the most cited and/or downloaded articles in the Repository together with an editorial overview by a senior researcher who will locate Huddersfield research within the broader national and international literature in the relevant fields and disciplines. An audit of the University’s journals resulted in the addition of another title during the project and also the potential for five others to be hosted, including two new peer-reviewed OA titles in 2012. In order to disseminate its output, the project developed a toolkit for other institutions, including new workflows, a licence to publish template and guidelines for new title proposals. The project hopes the toolkit will inspire other institutions to investigate OA journal publishing. A major output of HOAP for Huddersfield has been a fundamental change in the understanding of the utility of Institutional Repositories in which ‘innovation’ and ‘impact’ displace ‘management’ and ‘preservation” as the primary functions. The HOAP platform provides not only an interface through which both original and archived peer-reviewed content can be delivered in a sustainable OA format but also a means of delivering specialist content to specific academic audiences through a traditional journal front-end. The poster will share the recommendations for further developments at Huddersfield and implications for the wider community

    Purpose It is clear that libraries consider the use of data to inform decision making a top priority in the next five years. Jisc’s considerable work on activity data has highlighted the lack of tools and services for libraries to exploit this data. The purpose of this paper is to explore the potential of a shared analytics service for UK academic libraries and introduce the Jisc Library Analytics and Metrics Project (LAMP). The project aims to help libraries effectively management collections and services as well as delivering pre-emptive indicators and ‘actionable insights’ to help identify new trends, personalise services and improve efficiencies, economies and effectiveness (student attainment and satisfaction and institutional reputation, for example) . The project builds on the Library Impact Data Project at the University of Huddersfield and the work of the Copac Activity Data and Collections Management tools. The paper will deliver a case study of the project, its progress to date, the challenges of such an approach and the implications the service has for academic libraries. Design, methodology or approach The paper will be a case study of the project and its institutional partners and early adopters work to date and explore both the technical and cultural challenges of the work as well as its implications for the role of the library within the institution and the services it provides. Specifically the case study will comprise of the following aspects: 1. A brief history of the work and the context of library analytics services in the UK (and internationally). A description of the approach adopted by the project, and the vision and goals of the project 2. Exploration of the challenges associated with the project. In particular the challenges around accessing and sharing the data, ‘warehousing’ and data infrastructure considerations and the design challenge of visualising the data sources in a useful and coherent way 3. Outline of the implications of the project and the resultant service. In particular the implications for benchmarking (within the UK and beyond), standards development for library statistics and impact (in particular the development of ISO 16439), service development, the role of the library within the wider institution and skills and expertise of librarians. Findings This paper will report on the initial findings of the project, which will run from January 2013 to October 2013. In particular it will consider the issues surfaced through the close engagement with the academic library community (through the projects community advisory and planning group) and the institutional early-adopters around data gathering and analysis. Practical implications Data accumulated in one context has the potential to inform decisions and interventions elsewhere. While there are a number of recognised and well understood use-cases for library analytics these tend to revolve around usage and collection management. Yet, the potential of a shared analytics service is in uncovering those links and indicators across diverse data sets. The paper will consider a number of practical impacts: Performance: benchmarking, student attainment, research productivity Design: fine tuning services, personalised support Trends: research landscape, student marketplace, utilisation of resources. The case study will explore these practical implications for libraries and what they mean for the future of the library within the academy. Originality and value of the proposal The paper will present a case study of a unique service that currently fills an important gap within the library analytics space. The paper will focus on the services potential to transform both the way the library works and how it is erceived by its users, as well as its role and relationship within the broader institution

    The Sound of the Crowd: Using Social Media to develop best practices for Open Access Workflows for Academic Librarians (OAWAL)

    For the past nine months, Graham stone and Jill emery have been promotion OAWAL: Open Access Workflows for Academic Librarians on a blog site, through facebook, through Twitter, and at in-person events in both the US and UK to raise awareness of open access management in academic libraries and in an attempt to crowdsource best practices internationally. At the in-person meetings, we've used a technique known as the H Form which was developed by an independent consulting group known in the UK as "Peanut". This overview will outline the current project and focus on feedback received. It will also highlight some of the changes that have been made in response to the feedback given and future plans of this project

    TERMS: Techniques for electronic resources management

    Librarians and information specialists have been finding ways to manage electronic resources for over a decade now. However, much of this work has been an ad hoc and learn-as-you-go process. The literature on electronic resource management shows this work as being segmented into many different areas of traditional librarian roles within the library. In addition, the literature show how management of these resources has driven the development of various management tools in the market as well as serve as the greatest need in the development of next generation library systems. TERMS is an attempt to create a series of on-going and continually developing set of management best practices for electronic resource management in libraries
